Annually, the tennis tournament of WTA (Women’s Tennis Association) Tour Championships is played at the end of the season. This tournament is consisted of the top-ranked players for the WTA Tour. The current sponsored name of the event is Sony Ericsson Championships. In August 1971, the first championships were held at Houston, Texas. It was one of the tournament series sponsored by Virginia Slims. However, the event was staged before the series ended.
After the four Grand Slam tournaments, WTA Tour Championships are generally recognized as the 5th most prestigious event for women’s tour. One reason for this is that the top-ranked eight players are usually participated in the tournament.
At the end of the series in 1972, the tournament was moved as a climax event to Boca Raton, Florida in the United States. For year 2010, the event edition is scheduled to be hosted by Istanbul in Turkey. The upcoming events of 2011, 2012, and 2013 are also expected to happen in Istanbul.
